PPS has proposed closing Peninsula Elementary
Portland Public Schools (PPS) released a proposal on October 5th to close and combine schools across the district. We want neighbors to know what's being considered and where to find more information because Peninsula Elementary, our neighborhood school, is on the closure list in both versions of the proposed plans.
This is a proposal, not a final decision. The PPS School Board is expected to vote in December.
What's being proposed: PPS says it faces a $65 million budget shortfall and falling enrollment. The district has shared two proposed changes. One would close 14 schools, and the other would close 11. Peninsula is on both lists. Under the proposal, Peninsula students would move to Rosa Parks Elementary starting in fall 2027. The Peninsula catchment area would also filter into George Middle School and Roosevelt High School.
Concerned about the proposal? The proposal is on the agenda for tonight's PPS School Board meeting.
When: TODAY, Tuesday, October 6th, 6pm-8pm
Where: PPS district office, 501 N Dixon St, or watch on YouTube
Several groups concerned with the proposal are participating in a rally before the board meeting starting at 5pm in front of the PPS district office.
How to share your thoughts with the school board:
Attend tonight's meeting: The meeting is open to the public. Seating in the boardroom is limited to 70 people, so you can also watch live on YouTube.
Send written comments: Email rightsizing@pps.net with questions or feedback on the proposal. You can also write to the school board at schoolboard@pps.net.
Give feedback to PPS: The district's rightsizing page has the proposal documents, answers to common questions, a survey, and upcoming community sessions.
